I'm considering the pros and cons of restricting access to "myspace" and "facebook" and similar such sites on the library's computers. While I certainly have nothing against such sites as a general rule of the ideas of freedom of speech and expression, I'm not quite convinced of their functionality on a library's computer. I've been told they're a great way to twiddle away the hours while on the internet, and I truly have nothing against twiddling away hours doing something you enjoy. In fact, I've been known to poke around myspace.com from time to time, specifically at the music pages. However, I do wonder about the content on those sites. How safe are they really? Didn't they find paedophiles on those sites? I'm not sure how comfortable I feel allowing such sites to be so easily accessible on the library's computers, not just for younger patrons but for potential paedophiles and other ne'er-do-wells as well. I'm not accusing anyone here of such things, of course, but I am concerned, and I'm weighing the pros and cons.
Another thing I was thinking over was a books-to-movies (and television shows and mini-serieses) section. So many books have been made into movies (and vice versa, really), that I was thinking of maybe having a special section dedicated to the two, or at the very least, putting up some kind of display for a month or two. I'm personally almost always a fan of the book over the movie, but there are some really good movies that come from books. And I think it's a good way to promote reading. Not everyone may know a certain movie originally came from a book, and if they liked the movie, perhaps they'll enjoy reading the book, too. I'm still sorting through the movie collection this library has, but once that's done, I think I might start working on this.
Before I do the books-to-movies-and-television-shows-and-mini-serieses project, however, I really have to get the children's section sorted out. I'm not exactly sure what happened there, but it really needs to be sorted out. And I'm going to take out all the young adult materials and give them their own section. They really deserve it. And I may also set up a suggestion box. After all, this is your library, and everyone deserves a say in what and how things are done with it and how to make it a better library for all of its patrons.
On a less professional, more personal note, ( twenty-five facts about me. )
